Inspired in Dublin

Yesterday I spent the afternoon in Dublin, I restocked the lovely Irish Design Shop with some of my jewellery (brilliant shop and well worth a visit if you appreciate well designed handmade products) and also called into the Leinster Gallery to find out I'd sold all my 'Poppies'!  I also popped into Gormley's Fine Art to have a quick look around and happened upon inspiring and uplifting work by two artists, Peter Monaghan and Brain Palm.

Monaghan's work reminded me of Bridget Riley's Op Art, but he uses the angles of raised elements to play with the viewers movement around the piece.  Palm on the other hand creates fascinating 'dioramas' depicting famous seafaring scenes which seem like a cross between a stop motion animation model for children's TV in the 60's and a traditional, commemorative ship portrait.  One thing I think both artist's work has in common is an element of relief which can't be fully appreciated unless seen 'in the flesh'.  So the images below only hint at what the actual pieces achieve.

'Titanic Approaching Southampton Dressed', Brian Palm, Painted timber and found objects encased in a glass fronted wooden champagne box, illuminated by an electric bulb.

'Colour Movements 1', Peter Monaghan, Mixed Media.
